Age and growth of Hypophthalmus edentatus (Spix), (Siluriformes, Hypophthalmidae) in the Itaipu Reservoir, Paraná, Brazil Zoologia
Ambrósio,Ângela Maria; Gomes,Luiz Carlos; Agostinho,Ângelo Antônio.
Age and growth of Hypophthalmus edentatus (Spix, 1829) (Siluriformes, Hypophthalmidae) was determined. Data were collected from December 1983 to November 1984 and from April 1997 to March 1998 in the Itaipu Reservoir. To evaluate reading consistency, it was analyzed the coefficient of variation of the total length for each annulus observed in the otoliths. Through marginal increment analysis, it was determined that the annuli formed annually (April) indicating that otoliths may be used in the study of age and growth of the species. Food supply was considered the main factor affecting growth and annuli formation in both periods. Back-calculated data were used to assess if the Rosa Lee phenomenon, commom in selective samples like commercial fishing, occured....

Monteiro, Vanessa; UEM; Benedito, Evanilde; UEM; Domingues, Wladimir Marques; UEM.

Effect of alcohol and formaldehyde on the δ13C and δ15N isotopic composition of Plagioscion squamosissimus and Hypophthalmus edentates (Pisces, Osteichthyes) - doi: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v33i4.70 Biological Sciences
Manetta, Gislaine Iachstel; UEM; Benedito, Evanilde; UEM, Maringá; Ducatti, Carlos; UNESP.
The present study investigates the δ13C and δ15N isotopic composition in frozen samples (control), samples in alcohol and in formaldehyde of Plagioscion squamosissimus and Hypophthalmus edentates. From each individual we extracted a strip of muscle from the region above the lateral line, in the dorsal fin base, that was divided into three equal parts, each one was submitted to one type of treatment: freeze – control group (-15oC), conservation in alcohol 70% and fixation in formaldehyde 4%. Samples were kept under those treatments for 30 days, washed and submerged in distilled water for 4 hours. Afterwards, they were dried up in air oven at 60oC for 48 hours and macerated until the obtaining of a fine powder. A significant difference...

Effect of biological variables and capture period on the proximate composition and fatty acid composition of the dorsal muscle tissue of Hypophthalmus edentatus (Spix, 1829) BABT
Oliveira,Edna Regina Netto de; Agostinho,Angelo Antonio; Matsushita,Makoto.
This study analyzed the chemical composition of the dorsal muscle tissue of Hypophthalmus edentatus, in particular, fatty acids of the lipidic fraction, and its relationship with the biological variables and the capture period. The average values for moisture, ash, protein and total lipids were 63.15, 1.11, 14.27 and 17.24%, respectively. In the lipidic fraction, 35 fatty acids were identified, the most abundant being: 16:0, 18:1omega9, 18:0, 16:1omega7, 18:3omega3, DHA and EPA. The totals of respectively saturated, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids were 41.15, 35.30 and 23.88%. The PUFA/SFA ratio was equal to 0.68 and the omega3/ omega6 ratio equal to 1.98. The PCA demonstrated that the long chain PUFAs contributed positively to the...

Morphological description of larvae of the Mapará Hypophthalmus edentatus (Spix) (Osteichthyes, Hypophthalmidae) in the Itaipu reservoir (Parana River, Brazil) Zoologia
Nakatani,Keshiyu; Baumgartner,Gilmar; Latini,João Dirço.
The ontogenetic aspects of larvae of Hypophthalmus edentatus (Spix, 1829) from the ichthyoplankton samples collected in the Itaipu reservoir between March 1988 and April 1990 were analysed. Sample were caught by 0.5 mm mesh conic-cylindrical plankton net. Larvae of H. edentatus were identified and described as Siluriforms from the morphological and morphometric development series. They have a small to medium-sized head, long body, small eyes, little pigmentation, mandibular barbules and 53 to 56 myomeres. High values obtained with correlation coefficient (r > 0.97; p < 0.001) show that growth was proportional in different parts of the body.
